IRON NEST Beginner Guide: From Orders to Your First Hit
IRON NEST is not a point-and-click artillery game. A reliable shot is a chain: read the order, place known points on the map, locate the target, measure from your Nest, choose ammunition and charges, set bearing and elevation, then verify before firing. If one link is wrong, a perfect-looking solution can still miss by kilometres.
Evidence status: The overall workflow is cross-checked against the official site, a hands-on media report, and multiple community guides. Exact default key bindings and some interface labels still need an in-game check on build 1.0 (1558).
60-second quick start
- Read the current High Command message and identify every piece of target information.
- Place the IRON NEST, spotters, and known reference points before drawing target lines.
- Use the supplied coordinate, bearing, distance, or relative instruction to locate the target.
- Measure from the IRON NEST to the target for the final bearing and range.
- Select a shell that matches the target and mission intent.
- Choose a charge count and obtain an elevation from the in-game ballistic process.
- Load the shell and the intended number of charges.
- Rotate to the bearing, set elevation, and compare the gun settings with your target card.
- Fire only after the target, shell, charges, bearing, and elevation all agree.
The most damaging beginner error is measuring in reverse. A line from the target back to the Nest is approximately 180 degrees away from the firing direction. Always think Nest → target.
The complete firing loop
1. Turn the order into map inputs
Separate the message into known facts: a grid reference, an observation point, a bearing, a distance, or a relationship to a previous target. Do not start calculating while those inputs are still mixed together. Old clipboard values and old map lines are useful only if they still belong to the current target.
2. Solve the target location
Two bearings intersect at a target. A bearing and a distance create a line-and-circle intersection. Two distances can produce two candidate points; use a third clue, reconnaissance, or illumination to choose between them rather than guessing. The map and triangulation guide covers these cases in detail.
3. Build a firing solution
Once the target is on the map, measure range and bearing from the Nest. The game’s firing workflow combines range, charges, and elevation; shell and target information also help produce an unambiguous target card. Our firing solution calculator is a community-formula planning aid, not a replacement for the in-game calculator.
4. Load, set, and cross-check
Confirm the shell before committing it to the loading sequence. Recheck the charge count, because elevation depends on it. Compare the target card with the turret bearing and barrel elevation. When the Nest has moved, treat earlier solutions as stale until you remeasure from the new position.
Five failure checks before you fire
- Wrong direction: you measured target → Nest instead of Nest → target.
- Wrong sub-grid: the Nest, spotter, or reference marker is in the wrong small square.
- Stale information: old lines or clipboard values belong to another target.
- Partial check: range looks right, but bearing, elevation, shell, or charges do not.
- Timer panic: in Counter-Battery you triggered the clock before preparing multiple targets.
If the shell misses, diagnose the chain in that order. Randomly changing elevation can hide the original error and make the next shot harder to understand.
What this guide does not claim
This page does not publish a full keyboard map because the available key list was documented before the full release. It also does not provide exact shell radii, costs, or every mission target. Those belong in version-labelled references after an in-game check. See ammo and shell types for the safe selection framework and missions for the current campaign order.
